vdWgLX. SPOILERS!!!There has been a longstanding debate amongst Avenger fans as to why Captain America wasn’t able to lift Thor’s hammer during the party in Stark Tower in Age of you may recall, Mjolnir, Thor’s hammer, can only be lifted by those who are deemed “worthy.”Admittedly, this is quite an obscure classification, because what being “worthy” constitutes is never fully explained in the context of the MCU. But based on Thor’s own history, he becomes unworthy when his arrogance gets the better of him and he gets banished to earth to learn a lesson in why isn’t Steve Rogers — the superhero with the most humble beginnings out of all the Avengers combined — worthy to lift Thor’s hammer? After all, unlike Thor or Tony Stark, he was born downtrodden and poor, and wasn’t bestowed with godlike abilities or superhuman Ultron, the diabolical killer robot, calls Steve “God’s righteous man.”But the telling thing is the comment that Ultron makes in its entirety, when he says, “Captain America — God’s righteous man, pretending you can live without a war.”It has been suggested that the reason that Steve Rogers is unworthy is that ultimately, he doesn’t long for peace because being a soldier is where he finds his true value. Without a battlefield, he doesn’t know how he fits into this strange and modern suggests this himself during Civil War when he says, “If I see a situation pointed south, I can’t ignore it. Sometimes I wish I could.”“No, you don’t,” Tony shoots smiles and replies, “No, I don’t.”But why? Why is Steve so laser-focused on always being ready for a fight?Well, the thing that’s holding Rogers back from being pure of heart is the thing that makes him so compelling in the first place. As Loki states in the first Avengers film, “The soldier. A man out of time.”Because Rogers is a man out of time, it makes him stand apart from the world he is trying to protect. Like an ancient relic or antique, he is a glimpse into the past, but not a natural part of the other words, his unease at being a stranger in our modern world is the thing that makes him turn wholeheartedly to the only thing he’s truly good at; being a we can so poignantly see in the first Avengers film where we see Steve pounding away at a helpless punching bag, the new world has left him angry, frustrated, and confused at his place in he always fights for righteous causes, his motivation for fighting in the first place may not always be so a way, he fights out of desperation, not necessarily for the sake of the good fight. Ultimately, he was perhaps just a little too eager to lead the Steve himself says in The Winter Soldier, “For as long as I can remember I just wanted to do what was right. I guess I’m not quite sure what that is anymore. And I thought I could throw myself back in and follow orders, serve. It’s just not the same.”This point is further cemented in Age of Ultron when Tony says to Steve, “Well, it’s time for me to tap out. Maybe I should take a page out of Barton’s book and build Pepper a farm, hope nobody blows it up.”Steve responds by saying, “The simple life.”“You’ll get there one day,” Tony prophetically says for anyone who has seen Endgame.“I don’t know,” Steve replies, “family, stability. The guy who wanted all that went in the ice seventy-five years ago. I think someone else came out.”“You alright?” Tony asks.“I’m home.”But he’s not as he might to make the Avengers his family and his home, they ultimately were never either of those things. The Avengers gave Steve a purpose, a reason for being, but they were never his family, not Steve ultimately realized, even if it was on a subconscious level, was that in the modern world, he could never be just Steve Rogers, the kid from world would tolerate him, but he would never truly fit in. He realized that he would never have what Hawkeye had, a family of his Thanos came Thanos had an implausible solution to a problem that is in actuality, not a problem — but that’s a discussion for another day — the Snap had an effect on the universe, but not the one that Thanos ultimately of the Snap, Steve lost his two best friends Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes…again. Before this, he had also lost Peggy Carter as an old woman in Civil War. Almost everything that tied him to the old world and the new one was gone. Even his most valuable friendship with Tony Stark had dissolved, leaving him almost completely realized something that he had never considered before, that he wasn’t invincible and that he couldn’t win every fight. He knew that he had done everything he possibly could to stop Thanos, and it hadn’t been Thor unceremoniously killed Thanos after discovering that the Infinity Stones were gone for good, Rogers had no recourse but to accept defeat, something he had never faced was certainly odd hearing Rogers suggest to Black Widow in Endgame that perhaps it was time for them to move on, to leave the past think that Steve Rogers might have thought that by giving the ultimate soldier to the world, that that might be enough; for the world and also for himself. As it turns out, that concept in and of itself was the exact thing holding him back from being truly was only by accepting the fact that he was a human being, not a godlike figure, that he finally became truly worthy. By denying himself the future he truly longed for, he was only lying to others, and worse, longer was he a soldier with no was forced to conclude that maybe, just maybe, there was a life after Captain America, that perhaps he could finally move on and let others carry on the good fight without would contend that the Captain America during WWII would have been worthy to wield Thor’s hammer. During that period, Steve Rogers knew exactly who he was and what he was fighting for. He was fighting for the greater good, not just because it was the only recourse left to Rogers was the one that was worthy all along, not the patriotic symbol. Ultimately, the Snap was the only thing that was capable of forcing Captain America to become Steve Rogers once again. This was the motivation he needed to transition back from soldier to character arc had come full circle and he became closer to the person he was during WWII than the soldier that came out of the said that, Rogers never gave up on his willingness to fight, and in fact he was more powerful during the final moments of Endgame than ever before. The best moment of the final battle was seeing Captain America finally wielding the powerful Mjolnir. But even more powerful was the moment when we saw Steve facing down Thanos’ entire army by himself, a lone soldier against a force of thousands, tightening the strap of his trusty shield to his weary wasn’t just a soldier, but a worthy alter something Odin says to a young Thor, “A wise soldier never seeks out war, but he must always be ready for it.”If you enjoy movies and liked this story, give me some claps and follow me for more stories like this!Subscribe to oddBS on youtube here.
